The Ultimate Toy Biz X-Men Checklist & Archive

The Uncanny X-Men Series 4 (1993)

The ToyBiz X-Men Series 4 line, released in 1993, marked another major step in the evolution of the X-Men toy franchise, blending comic-accurate designs with the visual style popularized by X-Men: The Animated Series. This wave stood out for introducing a diverse mix of mutants—both heroes and villains—each featuring unique sculpts, bright paint applications, and signature action features. Each figure came carded with dynamic comic-style artwork and often included a mini trading card, a staple of ToyBiz’s early X-Men releases. Series 4 also reflected ToyBiz’s growing ambition—offering better articulation, improved sculpting, and more intricate action gimmicks compared to previous waves. As part of the expanding early ’90s X-Men toy boom, Series 4 helped keep the line fresh for collectors and kids alike, solidifying ToyBiz’s reputation as the defining maker of Marvel action figures during this golden era.

Action Gimmick: Interchangeable Arms

Flavor Text: The megalomaniacal mutant villain known as Apocalypse believes that total war between humans and mutants is inevitable. Variations & Reissues:

Additional Notes: The hoses for this Apocalypse are often missing when searching for loose figures. They are not mentioned on the packaging at all and were very easy to loose.

• Bishop

UPC: 0-35112-49113-2

Figure Code: 4911

Accessories: Gun, Quick Draw Gun

Action Gimmick: Quick Weapon Release

Flavor Text: Accidentally wrenched back through several decades by the time-twisting evil mutant named Fitzroy, Bishop arrived in our era from one of Earth’s many possible futures. Bishop survived the battle that followed, thanks to his mutant ability to absorb the energy attacks of others and turn that power back against his foes. Stranded in our time, Bishop has added his might to that of the present-day X-Men by joining their Gold Team!

Variations & Reissues:

Additional Notes: This is the first appearance of Bishop in the ToyBiz line, faithfully representing his look from Uncanny X-Men #222

• Omega Red

UPC: 0-35112-49163-7

Figure Code: 4916

Accessories: Tendrils x2

Action Gimmick: Whipping Tendrils

Flavor Text: Created during the Cold War and locked in cryogenic deep-freeze because he was too dangerous to control, the Russian super-soldier known as Omega Red was later revived and recruited by the ruthless ninja assassins known as the Hand! Under their tutelage, he has learned to control his aura of death – an energy field that drains the life force of anyone near him. Combined with his carbonadium tendrils, Omega Red’s powers make any battle with him a brush with death!

Variations & Reissues:

Additional Notes: This is one of Wolverine’s main villains first seen in X-Men #4. One tendril was made to insert into his arm and retract slightly.

• Strong Guy

UPC: 0-35112-49123-1

Figure Code: 4912

Accessories: None

Action Gimmick: Power Punch

Flavor Text: Strong Guy joined X-Factor for the simplest of reasons – the regular paycheck! Caring little about the problems between man and mutantkind, he lives instead for the finer things in life – wine, women and song! And he’s not above using his tremendous mutant strength to put those who would criticize his lifestyle in their place!

Variations & Reissues:

Additional Notes: This was the first modern member of X-Factor created in the ToyBiz Lines, however technically the first X-Factor was an iteration of Cyclops with his blue & white X-Factor costume. Presumably String Guy came with no accessories as his figure was so bulky but his hands were molded to hold accessories.

• Tusk

UPC: 0-35112-49143-9

Figure Code: 4914

Accessories: Tuskette

Action Gimmick: Surprise Mutant Attack

Flavor Text: One of Apocalypse’s Dark Riders, who are pledged to cleanse the Earth of the weak and unworthy, Tusk possesses the mutant ability to create smaller versions of himself – counterparts – and send them against his enemies. His dwarfish doppelgangers also share in his mutant powers of enhanced strength and durability, and will only follow Tusk’s will. Once loyal to Apocalypse, Tusk later moved on to serve the fiendish Stryfe, and now charts his own destiny. Where or when he will appear again is anybody’s guess!

Variations & Reissues:

Additional Notes: An interesting choice to be made into a figure. Tusk is to this day a fairly minor villain, most likely added to extend the Apocalypse villain family. The small tusk figure could rise out of Tusk’s back.

• Wolverine 5th Edition

UPC: 0-35112-49103-3

Figure Code: 49103

Accessories: Knives x6

Action Gimmick: Thrusting Knives

Flavor Text: Before his transformation into the super hero called Wolverine, the man called Logan plied his trade as one of the world’s foremost secret agents! His superhuman senses proved an invaluable asset in the realm of espionage, especially when enhanced by the most sophisticated sensing equipment money could buy! And his unequaled skill with razor edge weapons made him an unbeatable fighter – much to the regret of the enemies of world peace!

Variations & Reissues:

Additional Notes: Also know as Spy Wolverine this figure boasted the most accessories, six, at the time of its production.
